I spotted this large moth after lunch on our trip to Rio Secreto. That was an underground river cave system that we took a tour through. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to bring my camera in there, but that was probably a good thing in hindsight. We were in water above our heads at some points. It was a really cool experience though, and my favourite excursion that we went on in Mexico.
Anyway this moth was hanging out in the building where they fed us lunch afterwards. I was able to determine that it was a Black Witch (Ascalapha odorata). It had about a 4-5 inch wingspan, so a pretty good sized moth.
