Western Scrub-jay

On our trip to Palm Springs in November we visited the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve again. This jay appeared by the path in almost exactly the same spot as when we were there in February of 2014. So I’m pretty sure it must be the same bird I photographed last time. It’s kind of interesting that a small bird like that would have the same territory for a long time.

Canola Field Oil Pump Study

For a couple years now I’ve been searching for the right canola field with an oil pump in the middle of it to take some photos of. I wanted a clean background and no visible fencing or gaps between the pump and the field. I finally found a perfect one just outside of Drumheller, AB. I wasn’t able to get there during the golden hours, but still managed to get a few shots that I’m fairly happy with.

Oil & Water Macro in Green

Random number photo 489. A macro shot of oil in water over a green background. If you’re someone who pays attention to the camera settings for my photos you will notice the question mark for the aperture setting. This is because I was using my regular 50mm lens with a reverse macro ring, so the lens was attached to the camera backwards. This gives a macro effect, but you lose auto-focus and the ability to control your aperture. Unless of course, you were using a fully manual lens to begin with. I think I’ll try that next time actually, as I have a couple old film-era lenses kicking around.

Pudgy Bluebird of Happiness

Here’s another shot from the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Ironically, there were more birds in the parking lot area than we saw on the whole hike. This western bluebird was looking very puffed up as he perched on the entrance sign to the hiking trails.

Whenever I think of bluebirds, it always reminds me of a certain Gary Larson Far Side cartoon. There’s a sad-looking guy sitting on the edge of the bed in his dingy apartment with a chicken in the window. The caption reads “The Bluebird of Happiness long absent from his life, Ned is visited by the Chicken of Depression”.

Western Scrub-jay at Big Morongo

A new place in the Coachella valley that we discovered on our last trip, was the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. It’s just a little ways up from Palm Springs on the 29 Palms Highway. It was a nice spot with some good scenery and views. I would say we spotted this jay while hiking there, but it was more like he spotted us. We were walking along and all of a sudden he swooped in right in front of us and perched on a tree less than 10 feet in front of us. I actually had to back up a little to be sure I’d be able to focus on him with my long lens. I expect he was hoping for a handout of some kind as jays in general are often very tame when it comes to accepting food from people.

Stormy Monday Blues

First of all, sorry if you have a slow internet connection, it might take a while for the animation to show properly. This is what the sky looked like after our hot day on Monday. It got really windy and cloudy, but it didn’t actually rain or anything. I decided to make an animated gif from a bunch of the shots I took, and then picked one to do some hdr processing on. And a nod to whoever does your favourite version of the song “Stormy Monday Blues”. In my case, that’s Jethro Tull since it’s the version I’m familiar with.

Oil and Water Abstracts

I had some fun on the weekend. Inspired by a contact on Flickr, I decided to try my hand at doing some oil & water closeups. It was something different and actually pretty easy to set up. I just took a shallow glass baking dish with about an inch of water in it and added a bit of oil (in this case olive oil is all we had). I mounted the dish on some glasses to get it about 6 inches off the counter and used some coasters underneath to provide shape and color. It was hard to get them sharp with my cheap reverse macro filter on my 50mm lens, so I think a real macro lens or at least a set of extension tubes would work much better. It was still an interesting challenge and something I will probably try again at some point. The possibilities are almost endless and I can think of trying different mediums as well, maybe ice cubes or oil paint…
