Star Trail in Joshua Tree National Park

This photo was created in one of the picnic areas in Joshua Tree National Park. Headlights and taillights from cars leaving the area during my shots is what created the surreal foreground lighting. I think it makes it look like a strange movie set or something, but I kinda like it.

Every which way (Cee’s Which Way Photo Challenge)

Just south of Palm Desert there is this great highway called the Roy Wilson Memorial Hwy. It’s marvelously twisty and has a couple of great lookout points. I was able to set up my tripod and get this long exposure shot of the really bendy bits shortly after sunset. I used a combination of about 15 shots to get this. Most of them were around 30 second exposures, but the last one was just over 4 minutes and it really brought every thing together nicely. Fortunately there was a fair amount of traffic so I was able to get the entire section lit up with headlights and taillights.

RNP 3669 – Palm Desert Star Trail

Today’s random number ended up right in the middle of the sequence of shots that I used to create this star trail image. I figured I might as well show you the final product rather than one picture of some stars over a golf course. Over 300 individual photographs were taken to create this image.

Star Trails

There are two shots in today’s post, please let me know which one you prefer. They are both the same scene, just processed differently. The first is a classic startrail shot, made from stacking 318 individual shots to show the movement of the stars over time. The second is the same shot processed with a ‘comet’ effect. It conveys a greater sense of motion, but a lot of the dimmer stars disappear from the image. Do you have a favorite?

I collected the series of images by setting up my camera on my tripod and using my cable shutter release set in the pressed down position. The camera was set in continuous shooting mode, so that it just kept taking one picture right after the other. Then I painstakingly removed all of the trails caused by airplanes (there were a lot) to end up with a clean sky with just the stars. The rest of the scene was lit so well thanks to the full moon.

Well, my wife and I are back from visiting the Palm Springs area and we had a great trip. This is one of my favorite photos that I took while we were there. The Background Image

Here’s the image I used for the background of my blog. It was taken in Palm Springs in November. I set the camera up on my tripod out on the balcony. Once I had a good exposure setting for a 30 second exposure, I used my wired remote trigger to keep taking shots continuously for almost an hour. In total, I ended up with 111 shots, which I then painstakingly merged together to get the resulting star-trail shot. It took a lot longer than usual because I wanted to remove all the light trails from the many airplanes that went by during that time, which was a LOT!
