Float plane landing

In Tofino, BC there is a tour company that offers short float plane tours around the area. I took advantage of the predictably regular landings to get some more practice with panning photography. This is one of the best I ended up with.

Curling Panning Shot

Oiy, I’ve been neglecting my photography and this blog. It’s been almost two months since my last post. I haven’t taken a lot of shots in that time, but here’s one from a recent curling ‘funspiel’ hosted by the company my wife works for. I was trying some panning shots which are difficult at the best of times. This was one of the better ones.

Classic Cars and Panning

I got some more panning practice last night during the annual Rock’n August classic car event in town. We were a little late getting out to the parade so I didn’t have enough time to set up quite the way I wanted, but I managed to get a few shots that turned out not too bad. I would have liked to try using my tripod which would have eliminated any up/down movement but I didn’t have time, so these are all handheld shots. After a couple test shots, I dialed in the settings on manual to 1/20 shutter speed, F8 and ISO 100 with my 50mm lens. A little way through I changed to F11. The cars were moving pretty slowly so the effect is not very pronounced, but I was afraid to slow my shutter down any more for fear of not getting anything in focus. I added some saturation and sharpness in post-processing.

Classic Cars, Panning and HDR

The annual Rock’n August festival was held here in St. Albert on the weekend. It centers around a classic car show ‘n’ shine along with a cruise. We went down to where they start off so we could see them all passing by before they picked up too much speed. I decided to slow my shutter speed down and try getting some panning practice in. Apparently I need it. Out of over 300 shots I think I saved about a dozen. Even the best of them still had focus issues. So I decided to play around with them a bit and do some HDR processing. In the end, I went a little overboard as far as reality goes, but I think it suited the shots fairly well. I also converted them all to black and white except for the actual car which I left the colour on. These are the actual colours of the cars, I did not change them at all other than how the HDR processing affected them. Anyway I hope you enjoy, and if anyone can identify the make and model of them please let me know in a comment!

South Africa – Birds

I had a tough time getting many good bird photographs in South Africa. Even at the 400mm long end of my lens they were always a little too far away and I had to crop most of my images. Also, the sky was overcast most of the time during the safari segment of our trip, so it was hard to get anything but a dull white background. I tried some panning shots when we were on our Zambezi River cruise (technically Zimbabwe, not South Africa), and got one image I kind of like even though most of the birds are not sharply focused.

Leaving on a jet plane…

Well, Dawn is flying back from Vegas tonight, so in her honour I’m posting a couple pictures taken of/in an airplane. Both shots are the same plane actually, the first was when it was landing at the airport and the second from inside shortly after we took off. I spent about an hour practicing panning shots with the incoming flights and it just so happened that the best one was of the actual plane that we were waiting for. The husky nose art really adds to the feeling of the movement of the airplane. And yes, I left the wingtip in the second shot on purpose 🙂
