Elk Island Star Trails

So I knew to get lots of stars I needed to get out of the city so here’s a star trail shot taken yesterday at Elk Island National Park. It was nice because we were able to have a fire to keep warm while waiting for the camera. We roasted some hot dogs and marshmallows and listened to music to pass the time, almost two hours, that it took to get all the necessary shots. The first shot I took was of us sitting on the bench and I blended that in after creating the star trails with the rest of the photos using a great free program called StarStax by Markus Enzweiler.

One final picture from our last trip to Palm Springs. A star trail composite at Arch Rock in Joshua Tree National Park. Over 100 exposures of 30 seconds each. I love making these, but they are a little time consuming when you’re out there and it starts getting chilly…

Mauna Kea Star Trails

One of my favourite things to make, a star trail shot from Mauna Kea. We only went as far up as the visitor center, then hiked across the road to a spot looking over the valley with the sunset. Spent about an hour with the camera there and ended up with this shot made from seventy 30 second exposures. I was happy to also get the light trails from the cars driving up and down the road, as well as some cool airplane trails which you can see just above where the sunset was.

Comet Effect Star Trails at Ukrainian Orthodox Church

This image was made from the same shots as my previous post, just processed differently to give a ‘comet effect’ on the star trails. This results in a darker background as it puts more emphasis on the later shots instead of just adding the bright spots to the first image. So the sky is darker and you can actually see that there was some faint green aurora borealis starting to appear on the horizon.

I managed to capture one nice meteorite last night, part of the 2016 Perseid meteor shower. I probably could have gotten a few more, but I had to keep clearing the condensation off of my lens so I could only photograph for a few minutes at a time. This was a nice bright one though, that made it all worthwhile. Taken out at Elk Island National Park in central Alberta.

This photo was created in one of the picnic areas in Joshua Tree National Park. Headlights and taillights from cars leaving the area during my shots is what created the surreal foreground lighting. I think it makes it look like a strange movie set or something, but I kinda like it.
