At some point on a vacation I end up taking a sunset or sunrise photo that I want to over-process in hdr. For our last Hawaii trip, this was that photo. Certainly a little overdone, but I kinda like how it turned out.

We always find ourselves up pretty early when we first get to Hawaii, I suppose because of the 3 hour time difference to where we live. The good news is that provides an opportunity to see some sunrises. This photo was taken from the top of the bluff on Shipwreck Beach as seen in my previous post while waiting for the sun to come up.

Oahu, Hawaii (part two, 6 images)

Day two on Oahu was a fairly lazy day. We still did some walking around, but spent quite a bit of time on or near the beach. The black and white sailboat and pigeon photos I took in the mid-afternoon, but all the rest were taken around sunset. The shot of Diamond Head I took while holding Dawn’s sunglasses in front of my camera, just to see what kind of effect it would give. People-watching was always interesting here. In the beach scene photo my favorite elements are the guy on the sidewalk crouching to take a picture, and the little kid photo-bombing the wedding shoot. The orange sailboat silhouette photo got me some recognition on Flickr, as it made it into Explore for a day, the first time that has happened for me. It was pretty cool getting over 12,000 views and 200 fav’s in one day.

Oahu, Hawaii (part one, 5 images)

I love Hawaii. Why can’t Canada have a tropical paradise like this? (I’m talking to you, Turks and Caicos) My wife and I are recently back from a trip to Oahu. Although not the largest, it is the “main” island as far as development and population goes. In spite of the crowds and the traffic, we had a great time. For the next while I’ll be sharing some of the photos I took while we were there.

Day one had us up well before sunrise, thanks to the time difference. I didn’t mind though, as I was eager to see what kind of shots I could get from the beach. Later we walked to and then up the Diamond Head crater. That was a fun hike with some pretty rewarding views from the top. That tired us out and we just relaxed for the rest of the day. Enjoy these images and stay tuned for more!

Here’s another photo from our trip through the Columbia Icefields this summer. I switched out my wide angle lens for my 50mm and got a little closer view of the side of the mountain just as the sun was coming up. Now, I admit to some post-processing of the image, but I’m pretty happy with the way this one turned out.

My view should be similar to this Saturday morning (minus the propeller since we’ll be on a jet). We’re going to Palm Springs for a week and I’m so looking forward to it. It should be about the same temperature as it is here, just on the other size of 0°C! Actually even more, from about -17 to +27. It should be a nice relaxing time (except for when we go to the outlet mall…). We may also take a drive out to the coast to see some ocean since it’s only about a 2 hour drive. Hopefully I don’t drive my wife bonkers looking for the perfect landscape photo…
