Today’s challenge photo is a sailboat off the shore of Waikiki in Hawaii. I picked this photo today because of the person that I’m inviting to the challenge. Ron Scubadiver shares my love of Hawaii and I enjoy his work even though it is quite different than mine. So Ron, if you’re up for a 5 day b&w challenge feel free to join in!

Day seven on Oahu was, sadly, our last and it was time to go home. However, since our flight didn’t leave until almost midnight, we still had the whole day to enjoy. We stopped at a beach for a while and watched this sandpiper get chased by the waves as he was trying to eat seaweed. Then we headed back towards Honolulu and stopped at the Valley of the Temples to take a look at the Byodo-In temple. Then we watched the sun set at Waikiki again as we were just killing time by then. It was a great trip, but as always it was nice to be back in our own bed again.

Day four was our last day in Waikiki. Up early again, I got a shot of The War Memorial at sunrise. Before heading up to the north shore we wanted to do the Manoa Falls hike. It was a fun hike, not too difficult or too long. I got a few shots of the area, but had a hard time getting anything I was really happy with. By the time we were there it was already the middle of the day, so the lighting was harsh and unforgiving. Afterwards we continued to Turtle Bay on the north shore and had a very nice dinner for our anniversary which was that day.

Oahu, Hawaii (part two, 6 images)

Day two on Oahu was a fairly lazy day. We still did some walking around, but spent quite a bit of time on or near the beach. The black and white sailboat and pigeon photos I took in the mid-afternoon, but all the rest were taken around sunset. The shot of Diamond Head I took while holding Dawn’s sunglasses in front of my camera, just to see what kind of effect it would give. People-watching was always interesting here. In the beach scene photo my favorite elements are the guy on the sidewalk crouching to take a picture, and the little kid photo-bombing the wedding shoot. The orange sailboat silhouette photo got me some recognition on Flickr, as it made it into Explore for a day, the first time that has happened for me. It was pretty cool getting over 12,000 views and 200 fav’s in one day.

Oahu, Hawaii (part one, 5 images)

I love Hawaii. Why can’t Canada have a tropical paradise like this? (I’m talking to you, Turks and Caicos) My wife and I are recently back from a trip to Oahu. Although not the largest, it is the “main” island as far as development and population goes. In spite of the crowds and the traffic, we had a great time. For the next while I’ll be sharing some of the photos I took while we were there.

Day one had us up well before sunrise, thanks to the time difference. I didn’t mind though, as I was eager to see what kind of shots I could get from the beach. Later we walked to and then up the Diamond Head crater. That was a fun hike with some pretty rewarding views from the top. That tired us out and we just relaxed for the rest of the day.
